Why I Love This Green Tea Smoothie
If you’re looking for a satisfying green smoothie recipe that’s light, refreshing, and made with real whole food ingredients, this one checks all the boxes. Whether you’re following a keto diet, ketogenic diet, or simply trying to eat a healthier low-carb diet, this smoothie delivers plenty of nutritional value while keeping the net carbs low.
Unlike many breakfast smoothies made with fruit juice and added sugars, this smoothie is rich in nutrient-rich ingredients, healthy fats, and nutritious leafy greens that help keep your blood sugar steady while providing lasting energy. It’s one of my favorite ways to nourish my body after a weekend of celebrations, vacations, holidays, or anytime I’m craving something fresh and hydrating.
The best part? This keto smoothie recipe comes together in just five minutes and can easily be customized with collagen peptides, grass-fed whey protein, or your favorite protein powder for an even more satisfying breakfast.
I don’t know about you, but certain days require different kinds of breakfast choices.
Mondays. Mondays are never easy after a fun weekend.
Truth be told, I sometimes indulge in a few too many snacks or simply eat a little more than I normally would compared to a typical weekday. Whether it’s a family cookout, holiday gathering, birthday celebration, or vacation, life happens.
Rather than beating myself up or feeling like I need an extreme cleanse, I’ve learned that the fastest way to feel better is simply getting right back to nourishing my body with wholesome foods.
That’s exactly why I love this green tea smoothie.
Even if you’re not much of a tea person (I’m honestly not either), don’t let that stop you from trying this recipe. The green tea powder has a surprisingly mild flavor once it’s blended together with creamy avocado, crisp cucumber, fresh lemon juice, and spinach. Instead of tasting like tea, it’s fresh, creamy, and incredibly refreshing.
Being that this recipe was originally created after Father’s Day, I remember waking up feeling sluggish and not quite ready to tackle the week ahead. My body wasn’t asking for another cup of coffee or a sugary breakfast—it was asking for hydration, real nutrition, and simple whole foods.
So I made this smoothie. And all was well in the world.
I felt refreshed, energized, and ready to get back into my normal routine.
Today, it’s still one of my favorite breakfast smoothies because it helps me feel good without feeling deprived. Sometimes the simplest recipes become the ones we come back to again and again.
This Isn’t a Juice Cleanse-It’s Real Food That Supports Your Body
When most people hear the words “detox smoothie,” they picture drinking nothing but juice for several days or following a restrictive cleanse.
That has never been my philosophy.
Your body already has an incredible built-in detoxification system. Your liver works around the clock filtering toxins, metabolizing hormones, processing medications, supporting your digestive system, regulating blood sugar, and producing bile to help digest fats.
Instead of trying to force your body to detox, I believe in supporting the amazing work your liver is already doing by eating nutrient-dense whole foods every day.
That’s exactly why I created this green tea smoothie recipe.
Every ingredient was chosen to provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, hydration, fiber, and healthy fats that nourish your body naturally. It’s not about perfection or deprivation—it’s about giving your body the right ingredients so it can do what it was designed to do.
Many women in midlife tell me they’re dealing with stubborn body fat, low energy, bloating, hormone imbalance, or feeling like their healthy eating efforts just aren’t working anymore. While there’s rarely one simple answer, I’ve found that consistently eating whole, nutrient-rich foods is one of the best places to start.
That’s the same philosophy behind my 14-Day Liver Reset. Rather than starving yourself or relying on expensive detox products, we focus on protein-forward meals, cruciferous vegetables, hydration, digestive support, healthy fats, and sustainable habits that support your overall health for the long term.
If you’ve ever wondered whether your liver could use a little extra support, be sure to take my FREE Liver Health Quiz. It’s a simple way to discover whether some of your symptoms could be related to sluggish detox pathways and learn practical next steps to help you feel your best.

Health Benefits of This Keto Green Tea Smoothie
One of the reasons I continue making this green tea smoothie recipe year after year is because every ingredient serves a purpose. Instead of filling a blender with fruit juice and ingredients that can spike blood sugar, I chose nutrient-dense whole foods that work together to nourish your body from the inside out.
This low carb smoothie is packed with nutrient-rich ingredients that provide healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants while keeping the net carbs low. Whether your goal is improving your overall health, supporting your weight loss journey, or simply enjoying a delicious breakfast made with real food, this smoothie is a great way to start your morning.
No single food can magically “detox” your body, but consistently eating nutrient-rich whole foods gives your liver, digestive system, and immune system the building blocks they need to function at their best.

Why Green Tea Powder Is the Star
Although cucumber gives this smoothie its refreshing flavor, green tea powder is what makes this recipe unique.
Green tea has been enjoyed for centuries and is one of the most researched beverages in the world because of its impressive health benefits. It’s naturally rich in plant compounds called catechins, powerful antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress while supporting overall health.
Green tea also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that works alongside its natural caffeine to promote calm, focused energy. Many people find the combination provides a smoother energy boost than coffee without the jitters or afternoon crash.
You can use either green tea powder or matcha powder in this recipe. Matcha is simply a finely ground form of green tea where the entire leaf is consumed, giving it an even richer nutritional profile.
If you’re looking for a delicious keto matcha smoothie, simply substitute high-quality ceremonial or culinary matcha powder for the green tea powder listed in the recipe.
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, you can reduce the amount of powder or choose a decaffeinated variety and still enjoy this refreshing smoothie.
Why Broccoli Sprouts Belong in Every Liver-Support Smoothie
One ingredient I’ve added since originally publishing this recipe is broccoli sprouts, and I honestly wouldn’t make this smoothie without them now.
Broccoli sprouts are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can add to your diet. As members of the cruciferous vegetable family, they naturally contain compounds that support your body’s own detoxification pathways and healthy hormone metabolism.
Along with broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, and arugula, broccoli sprouts are foods I encourage often inside my 14-Day Liver Reset because they provide valuable nutrients that support healthy liver function.
The best part?
Their flavor is incredibly mild.
Once blended with cucumber, avocado, spinach, and lemon juice, you’ll hardly know they’re there, but your body certainly will appreciate the nutritional value they add.

Why Healthy Fats Matter
For years, people believed fat was something to avoid.
Today we know that healthy fats are an important part of a balanced diet.
That’s exactly why I use creamy avocado in this smoothie.
Avocados provide heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, folate, and many other important nutrients. Healthy fats also help your body absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D, E, and K found in many colorful vegetables.
Unlike smoothies made primarily with fruit, the combination of healthy fats and fiber helps slow digestion, promotes fullness, and supports healthy blood sugar levels throughout the morning.
It’s one of the reasons this keto smoothie recipe fits so well into a ketogenic diet or low-carb diet.

Why I Love Starting My Day with Bitters
One habit that’s become part of my morning routine is taking digestive bitters before breakfast.
Bitters have been used traditionally for generations to stimulate saliva, stomach acid, digestive enzymes, and bile production, all important parts of healthy digestion.
Bile plays an essential role in breaking down fats and absorbing fat-soluble nutrients from the foods we eat.
I usually take a serving of bitters about 10 to 15 minutes before enjoying this smoothie. It’s a simple habit that helps prepare my digestive system for the meal ahead.
Inside my Liver Reset, bitters are just one piece of the puzzle. We also focus on hydration, protein-forward meals, cruciferous vegetables, quality sleep, stress management, movement, and reducing processed foods to support the body’s natural detoxification process.
Want More Protein?
One change I’ve made over the years is increasing the protein in my breakfast.
When I first created this recipe, I was following a much higher-fat ketogenic approach. Today, after working with hundreds of women navigating perimenopause and menopause, I know that prioritizing protein first helps support muscle maintenance, healthy metabolism, and stable blood sugar.
If you’d like to turn this smoothie into a complete meal, simply add one scoop of:
- Collagen peptides (use code sugarfreemom10 for a discount)
- Grass-fed whey protein
- Your favorite unflavored protein powder
Collagen peptides are a wonderful way to increase protein while supporting healthy skin, hair, nails, joints, and connective tissue.
A quality grass-fed whey protein adds even more essential amino acids, making this smoothie especially satisfying after strength training or as part of your morning routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use matcha powder instead of green tea powder?
Absolutely!
This recipe works beautifully with either green tea powder or matcha powder. Matcha creates a slightly richer flavor and makes an excellent keto matcha smoothie while providing all the nutritional benefits of consuming the entire tea leaf.
Can I use a green tea bag?
Yes, although I recommend green tea powder whenever possible because it’s quicker and provides a smoother texture.
If using a tea bag, simply brew a strong cup of green tea, allow it to cool to room temperature, then use it in place of the water before blending.
Can I make this smoothie dairy free?
Yes! The recipe is naturally dairy free.
For an even creamier texture, replace the water with unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk.
A tablespoon of coconut cream also creates a rich, creamy smoothie while keeping it perfect for a ketogenic diet.

Great recipe. Thank you for sharing Brenda. I’ve included it our Banting (the South African version of low carb & keto) recipe roundup.
Trying to stay away from the super sweet fruit smoothies that I’ve become accustomed to (especially bananas, which I find way too sweet these days), but am not a fan of cucumber, except in cucumber, broccoli, & onion salad for some reason LOL. However, this looked good enough to try. I didn’t have Stevia on hand, so used Splenda (1 tbsp). It was good, but had to double the water to cut down on the cucumber taste. The cucumber I had was a little on the bitter side which didn’t help. I added another tsp. of lemon, and another tsp. of Splenda. Once I did that, it was pretty good. Very refreshing & will definitely make again with my modifications. Hopefully my next cucumber won’t be so bitter tasting. Might try adding some mint next time. Thanks for sharing!!
This tasted like grass to me. Any recommendations of something I can add to it to help?
More sweetener is what you might have needed.
It was gross and a waste of my groceries!!!!
Can you use regular brewed green tea instead?
I’ve not tried that but let me know if you do.
I do not have a sweet tooth. I will try it without the Stevia. I am looking for recipes without sweet additions! 🙂
Thank you!
Brenda, this sounds heavenly, but where do the 6.8 grams of carbohydrates come from?
It’s terrible!! And I can deal with the taste of “lawn/yard” in my mouth but this is terrible! Seriously upset I wasted my time!!
