Hunting for healthy snacks for you or the kids? I went on a hunt for the healthiest goodies I could find at my local Whole Foods.
We’ve all been there….with the kids…..at a market……and the never ending…..”Mom, can we buy this?” happens around every corner and every aisle. It makes shopping with kids difficult and takes so much longer than if you were by yourself with your list. I’m used to saying No, on most occasions, and especially with my youngest with peanut and tree nut allergies, it’s often inevitable he can’t have it anyway. But there are times when I too can not make all the homemade healthy snacks for our household each week. It happens, truth be told.
I’m not saying I buy any of these snacks on a weekly basis either, by no means, but since I’m often asked what are some goods choices when at different markets, I thought I’d do a search for you and share my opinion on a few I’ve found. Today’s market happens to be at Whole Foods. I plan to also do the same at Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club and any others you might request.
Here are just a few snacks I would be willing to buy for my kids if they asked or if I was just not able to make much on the weekend for the week ahead.
Nothing else in it but pure natural berries!
I usually make my own granola bars, nut free, because even these my youngest can’t have since they are processed in a facility on shared equipment which processes nuts. But If I’m in a bind and can’t make my own, my older two kids could have these. Yes they have sugar but compared to other bars out there, these are a pretty decent choice.
Gluten free, no msg, and dairy free, a pretty good bar here as well.
Although dates are the first ingredient which means they will have a higher amount of sugar than other bars, you can see there are only a few ingredients and all organic. I think this one is an excellent choice for the kids.
Again when I can’t make my own nut free granola or any granola for the family, I would choose this one. No added sugar at all and I could eat it as it is gluten free.
Coconut cookies! Maple syrup is the 4th ingredient which is often what I look for in packaged snacks. I usually like any type of sugar to be 5th or higher on the ingredient list, but this is a good option for a cookie for the kids!
My oldest loves fig newton type cookies. I’ve yet to venture into making a homemade version but this brand is one I often buy for him. They are gluten free and cane sugar is the fifth ingredient listed. It’ the better choice than finding a fig newton with the first ingredient as enriched wheat flour which is nothing more than white refined flour.
Well there you have it! At least 7 good options when shopping at Whole Foods. Be careful, just because it says organic doesn’t mean it contains whole natural ingredients. Don’t be fooled, just be cautious and be informed by reading the ingredient list and then decide.
