This Creamy Iced Bulletproof Coffee is not only Keto, Low carb and Sugar Free, but perfect for keeping you refreshed and full for hours!
What is Bulletproof Coffee?
The basic philosophy behind this keto coffee is that is adds butter and MCT oil to your typical coffee providing satiation to help you abstain from eating breakfast. If you’re on a keto diet, you know intermittent fasting is key in weight loss and enjoying this luscious, buttery, creamy coffee in the morning makes it very easy to skip breakfast. I can’t take the credit for the Bulletproof coffee phenomenon, it was Dave Asprey, author of The Bulletproof Diet.
Why MCT Oil?
You might be thinking, “Butter in coffee? Gross!” But don’t knock it till you try it my friends! I had felt the same way and once I did finally try it, I was blown away. The taste is the creamiest I’ve ever had and the fullness that comes with it is even better!
But then you might be thinking, why MCT oil? MCT’s are medium-chain triglycerides, a form of saturated fatty acid that has numerous health benefits. Yes coconut oil is an MCT oil, but MCT oil is a more concentrated source of fat that creates energy which almost instantly converts your body to using ketones. This is exactly what we’re looking for when it comes to being keto adapted.
Bulletproof Coffee Extras
Once you’ve enjoyed the basic bulletproof hot coffee with just those 3 basic ingredients, you may want to try playing around with other extra deliciousness. I really love adding a pinch fo salt and vanilla stevia to mine. You can also try adding in some Vital Protein Collagen Peptides for some extra protein if you’re planning on using this coffee more as a meal than just to hold you over in between two meals.
This Iced Bulletproof coffee recipe I’m sharing today is simply as an afternoon snack for me, perfect between lunch and dinner.
Iced Bulletproof Coffee (Keto and Low Carb) Recipe
Brenda’s Notes:
- You can use decaf or caffeinated coffee for this. I brew extra coffee in the morning, stick it in the fridge and by the afternoon I can make this keto coffee recipe!
- Whatever you do, don’t sub coconut oil for the MCT oil, it will clump and harden and that will be the grossest coffee you’ve ever had.
- Feel free to go without sweetener if you prefer or use your choice of sugar free sweetener to taste.
- You can eliminate the xanthin gum if you choose, but it helps make a wonderful thicker coffee almost like a smoothie!

I love my bulletproof coffee, but anything over 50 calories breaks a fast, so having this early morning doesn’t help with intermittent fasting. I usually have a coffee with my husband around 6:30am with collagen and a dash of flavored almond milk creamer, making sure it is under 50 calories so I maintain my fast. Then I can have my BPC later in the morning when I get hungry, usually 9-10am. If I haven’t eaten since 7pm, the previous day, my fast is 14-15 hours doing it this way.
I’ve heard some say that’s true but I’ve stayed in ketosis (checked by blood testing) in my morning bulletproof coffee even using butter and MCT oil. I think the key is that you don’t want to spike insulin during a fast and if going over a certain calorie amount makes that happen then right I wouldn’t do it. But this recipe is my afternoon snack after I’ve broken my fast with my lunch meal and a few hours before I eat my dinner meal.
Collagen will break your fast because any protien stops autophagy.
This is helpful. I have wondered how consuming even MCT oil can maintain a fast. Do you know of a replacement for the collagen. I cannot take that.
Hi Kris, how many times per week are you fasting in average?
I have been drinking hot bullet proof coffee with coconut oil for several months. At first I though greasy coffee, NO WAY. I do put powdered stevia and a little cocoa powder and salt. I put it in the blender to get a froth on top. It is sooooo good.
If you want to go easier than cleaning a blender, you can buy a small milk frother. Bodum makes one for 7 dollars and it works great! And no cleaning it or measuring into a blender!
This looks really good, but I don’t see the butter in the recipe? Was that deliberate?
Right because it will clump when making an iced bulletproof coffee, so in place of the butter is the heavy cream.
Ahhh….that makes sense. I am definitely going to try this. It looks amazing!
Thank you for sharing this! Do you brew your iced coffee the same strength as you would the hot? I’ve been doing the hot BP coffee and I love how it curbs my appetite in the morning…but I miss my iced coffee…thanks!
I brewed a bit stronger for the iced so instead of 2 scoops of coffee I used 3 in mine then refrigerated it.
I can add that making coffee ice cubes will make an iced coffee even better!
Thank you for the recipe!!!
BTW, I heard years ago that, if your coffee is bitter, just add a pinch of salt! I’ve used that trick for years, and it works great! Might be the reason that pinch of salt makes everything “marry” so nicely! Looks great — can’t wait to try it!
hahah I had no idea and thank you for telling me you heard that, now I know why i love it so! Thank you!
What does the xanthm gum do? this looks delish!!! Can’t wait to try it!!
It makes it thicker like a smoothie but it’s optional really.
This is great!! I do much better on iced drinks rather than hot. I use MCT powder rather than the oil. But I could switch to coconut oil for an occasional drink.
It is really nice to multiple hacks of original recipe on the internet. You can hack it as per your taste. The key is blending the ingredients.
I’m new to this low carb keto diet so I have a question that I didn’t see an answer for in the replies above and if there is one I missed it and apologize. Using the MCT oil will my drink be oily? I see above that the zantham gum will make it like a smoothie which I think I’ll leave out because I don’t want it thick.
Nope it won’t be oily at all as long as you blend in the blender. If you try to stir it with a spoon it will all be at the top of the glass and that is yucky!
I have a powedered MCT oil, would this work as well?
Thank you for the great recipe. I’m new to Keto dieting and I’m excited to try new recipes.
Sure!
Thank you Brenda for this and for your site????
I’ve never had bulletproof coffee before and I’m really curious to try this now. A cup of this creamy drink would be the perfect afternoon-pick-me-up, however, I won’t be able to find MCT oil that fast. Could I add any alternatives?
Coconut oil perhaps though I’ve not tried it.
I’ve tested the ice coffee, coconut oil and butter. The garbage disposal didn’t like it either ?. It got solidish, looked like curdling…. That was the last of the coffee that day. I will need to pick up some MCT oil, and try it with heavy cream. Thanks for the tip !!!!
Can I have this morning and afternoon?
If you want, that’s up to you and your goals and macros.
Can I substitute coconut cooking oil (stays liquid) only ingredient is coconut oil, for the mct?
Great idea! Let me know how it goes.
Thank you so very much! I am not a hot coffee drinker I always pour my black coffee into a cup of ice and I drink it black . I could not handle the bullet coffee hot so I haven’t even drink it since I tried it once and it made me sick . I made this today with MCT oil and heavy cream and I forgot to blend ice with all the other ingredients . However I did pour over ice and put it in my contigo cup. I cross my fingers before I tasted it and said a prayer hoping I’ll be able to like it . I did ! Yay! Hallelujah ! Yes it’s just that wonderful now I can finally drink the keto coffee . Your recipe was the first one I ever found that I could put on ice thank you so very much !
A new Keto girl ~ teresa
Just tried a half portion, because I did’t want to wait until my icecubes were solid frozen. 😉 I used freeze-dried-instant-decaf coffee and it tasted great!
Thank you for this recipe.
Instead of using cream do you think I’d be able to use coconut milk or would that be likely to solidify due to the ice, similar to the butter? Thanks
I think you could use coconut milk without a problem.
Do you find that the met oil clumps with the ice when blending ? My oil did so I switched to powdered met oil but I still find it gets clumpy with the ice
No I didn’t notice any clumping with my MCT oil but the powder is a great idea too. I’m surprised it still clumps in your blender though. Maybe it’s the brand you’re using?
Tip for using coconut oil: blend with HOT coffee — tastes soooo creamy and blends well – coffee looks lighter in colour as if milk/milk product was added.
I’m not a coffe drinker but love my chai and other teas. Would this work with teas?
Sure!
Since MCT oil can be costly I’ve been using olive oil. IT taste great but didn’t know it was still as good as MCT oil.
How is this only 128 Calories? A tablespoon of MCT is typically between 100-130 calories depending on brand, and a tablespoon of heavy cream is around 50. There are also calories, although very minute, in cinnamon and xanthan gum.
This makes 2 servings, totaling 24 ounces, one serving is 12 ounces.
I’m lactose intolerant. Is coconut cream a viable option for the cream?
Yes that will work.
This recipe looks so yummy! But what you said is still not correct. Check out Dr. Rhonda Patrick, she is fantastic. Her recent podcast talks about coffee and its relation with fasting: https://www.foundmyfitness.com/episodes/zero-fasting-qa?fbclid=IwAR0nhRguE2QplxVVKKWEeb7MS0-qIaVRdNEddtvQJLLdysodA7quLPLUysc
Could ground flax seed beused in place of the xantham gum?
You would probably need to use a lot more to thicken like xanthan gum does.
Hey, Thank you for coffee recipe, I really really like the way you explained it, Me and my family this coffee so i’m going to try this one in upcoming weekend where we set together once in a week so this will be amazing
Great recipe
Can you make it in advanced and put it in the fridge afterwards? Also, can it be subbed as a meal?
I would also like to make it in advance. Has anyone ever tried this? Thanks!
I tried bulletproof coffee this morning just using mct oil and a tablespoon of butter (cold) in a cup of cold brew coffee. I put all ingredients in my high power blender. The butter was just a curdled looking blob. How do I come out with a frothy looking mixture?
If you choose to use cold brew, it’s best to use heavy cream in place of butter. Optionally, you can use freshly brewed hot coffee with butter. Just pour the coffee, mct oil and butter into the blender and blend well. The hot coffee melts the butter.
This was good but the xantham gum didn’t dissolve! What the?! I drank “around” it as not to waste it haha. I also added some sugar free caramel syrup for sweetener.
Thank you for this recipe, Brenda! I definitely am in love with Bulletproof coffee and I do 20g total carbs per day on Keto so I need it to keep me satiated with little to no carbs. I will have to try it iced!
Currently I am using Salted Caramel K-cups from Aldi in mine with MCT oil, grass-fed butter, Himalayan pink salt, Stevia, and just recently added a scoop of collagen powder.
You are the sweetest, Brenda. Keto on! ?
I would also like to make it in advance. Has anyone ever tried this? Thanks!
Jenna
What could be the ideal time to have this, morning or evening?
I wouldn’t have it in the evening as it is meant to provide energy, so morning or early afternoon the latest.
Hi – quick question: I notice that the recipe says to blend the ice in the blender and also pour it over ice. Did you mean to do one or the other or do you do both?
I do both because I like it really cold but you could skip the pouring it over ice and just pour in a glass.
Do you know the protein content? The nutritional facts do t say.
There is none, that’s why it shows nothing.
Hot Bulletproof coffee with butter and MCT oil doesn’t break an intermittent fast. I drink that instead of having breakfast every morning. But will using heavy cream with the cold version instead of the butter also not break the fast? It’s really hot now and I’m finding I prefer cold coffee in the morning, If this option with cream doesn’t break the IF, that would be amazing.
Hi Judy,
It depends on who you ask or listen to regarding what breaks a fast. Some “experts” say butter and MCT oil does in fact still break your fast and some do not. Some say anything that is over 50 calories no matter if it’s cream or butter, does break a fast. So really it’s a controversial topic and one you have to decide if it will work for you or against you. 1 tablespoon of butter has twice the calories and fat as 1 tablespoon of heavy cream and both have little to no amounts of carbs depending on the brand you purchase. Hope that helps!
