Trader Joe’s Brown Rice Tortillas: Product Review

Do you have someone, no names revealed  :) , in your family that is just so darn picky to feed? I have two! The hubby and the oldest child. Both greatly dislike whole wheat tortillas. I have tried many ways to “make” them hoping they will choose them over white flour tortillas, but no luck.

I recently made a shopping trip to Trader Joe’s and bought these brown rice tortillas for a change for myself for lunch as well as having high hopes my boys would like them.

I had mine as a wrap for lunch, cold, straight from the fridge. I enjoyed it, but not being soft to wrap around like whole wheat tortillas, I didn’t think my boys would eat them. SO I decided to warm them up in a saute pan sprayed with olive oil cooking spray. Immediately the texture changes, they became phenomenal! I mean seriously fantastic! The heating causes them to becomes more pliable, perfect for making quesidillas or even enchiladas.

I added a little salt, flipped them over a minute or two on each side, added some shredded mozzarella and……….

The oldest picky child said these were the  best homemade chips he has ever had!

Do you realize that I RARELY hear such words from my oldest?! He couldn’t believe they were made from brown rice!

Here’s the ingredients listed on the package in order:

  1. Hi Brenda!
The nearest Trader Joe’s is almost an hour away. :(

Next time I go there, I’ll definitely check out these tortillas. Thanks for the review!

  2. The problem I had with these is that if I didn’t freeze them they would mold within a day or two of opening the package. The freezing makes them more brittle but they don’t mold. I do like the taste and texture, however. :)

  4. I have been eating these for a year and enjoy them a lot. I have always cooked them on an open flame like regular tortillias and that improves the texture, but am excited to try out the olive oil. That sounds great! They are wonderful for those of us who can’t/ dont eat gluten! Thanks!

  5. I wish these were good for wraps. If they are pliable when heated it could turn into an excellent warm wrap instead of a cold one when we are eating it at home. Does anyone know any other gluten free brand for cold wraps?

  7. I’m surprised by the glowing reviews. I bought these with high hopes because they are beautiful and really look like a tortilla. the texture is so off as to make them practically inedible to me. They are hard whether cold or heated, hard and crispy not like a chip but like uncooked dried pasta! I use rice paper wrappers to make fresh spring rolls and the texture before dunking in water to soften is exactly the texture of these tortillas. I will definitely go hack to making my own. Was just hoping for convenience. Oh well.

  8. Hi!
I bought these last week and decided to google “how to warm the up.” Your site came up first and I’m so glad it did!!!! I put them in the pan with olive oil spray just like you said. Added grilled chicken, peppers, cheese, basmati rice, salsa and voila! They were fantastic!!!!!

    Thanks for the tip!!!

  9. So glad I found your website! I love almost any brown rice products and as we are heading to Trader Joe’s today (an hour away), I am going to pick these up. My sister is on a strict low/sugar free diet for medical reasons. Definitely book-marking your blog!
