Best Sugar Free Dairy-Free Keto Hot Chocolate Mix

January 10, 2024 by Brenda Bennett 4 Comments

    Jump to Recipe

Here's a super easy, 3 ingredient, quick sugar free hot chocolate mix recipe you can make as a single serving or enjoy a larger batch and store in a mason jar for whenever you like!

    SUGAR FREE HOT CHOCOLATE MIX

I've been sugar free for the last 17 years and I know that once winter hits, I want a warm beverage on cold days!

If you love a hot beverage like hot chocolate, my easy sugar free hot chocolate mix is perfect for the cooler months.

This Keto Hot Chocolate Mix is sugar-free, dairy-free and requires just 3 simple ingredients! A cup of hot cocoa is the perfect treat in the winter season!

It also contains raw cacao powder or use unsweetened cocoa powder,  which is high in magnesium and full of essential vitamins and minerals.

You start with a basic recipe mix and can add some festive cheer with spiced cinnamon, boozy flavors or orange and cardamom flavors. You could even enjoy a few tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix right in your  cup of hot coffee for a rich chocolate taste of mocha!

Read the post below to make a large batch hot chocolate mix to always have some ready to go at any time or you can also make a single serving, both instructions are included in this post.

Carbs in Store Bought Hot Chocolate Mix

All hot chocolate mixes contain sugar in some form with about 18 grams of sugar.

The brand Swiss Miss dry mix, according to the Cronometer app, has 22 total carbs and will spike blood sugar. If you are watching your sugar intake of added sugar or you are on a keto diet or low carb diet for your health goals, you want to avoid this from happening.

Sugar Free Hot Cocoa Mix that is store bought has lots of harmful ingredients in the pre-made mix.

Things like artificial sweeteners, like Maltodextrin and/or sugar alcohols, like Maltitol, Sorbitol as well artificial flavors and even modified whey, which you want to stay away from if you're gluten free like me.

Our own homemade version has all the chocolate flavor and none of the questionable ingredients! Our keto friendly hot chocolate mix has 5 g net carbs.

Though a sugar free store bought chocolate mix has fewer calories than our hot cocoa mix, you can avoid those nasty artificial ingredients when you make it at home.

    Low Carb Sweetener Options

Our favorite sweeteners include Monk Fruit in liquid form, specifically chocolate liquid monk fruit is fantastic in this creamy hot cocoa recipe!

But another good option we also like to use is liquid stevia in chocolate or vanilla flavor. Another natural sugar free sweetener we like is Allulose in granulated or liquid form.

Easy Recipe for Big Batch or Single Serving

This low carb hot chocolate mix is super easy to customize. I like to make a batch of low carb hot chocolate mix to serve 4 and keep in a sealed jar in the cupboard so I always have some on hand.

You just need to multiply up or reduce down the single-serve version to meet your serving needs. Instructions for 4 servings is below and a single-serve version is within the printable recipe plugin below.

How to Make Homemade Keto Hot Chocolate Mix

    Dry Ingredients for Big Batch

To make a big batch of hot chocolate mix with 4 servings:

2 ounces sugar-free chocolate bars or dark chocolate (at least 85%), grated (course or ultra-course)

½ cup collagen powder (marine or grass-fed bovine)

    3 tablespoons raw cacao powder

Optional: 2 teaspoons low carb sweetener - or to taste (Use my Sweetener Guide & Conversion Chart)

Mix grated or chocolate with collagen powder, raw cacao and optional sweetener in a bowl. Transfer to glass jar and seal. Option to decorate the jar with twine, foliage and a gift label for holiday gifts.

Can store in an airtight container for 2 months.

Nutritional Info for Hot Chocolate Mix:

    2 Net Carbs

    155 Calories, 6 Total Carbs, 4 Fiber, 13 Protein, 9 Fat, 6 Saturated Fat

Note: if you make a batch of mix, about ¼ cup of mix is used per 10 ounces almond milk

    Wet Ingredients for Hot Chocolate

    Entire mix to serve 4:

5 cups unsweetened almond milk (option to substitute ½ cup with ½ cup of heavy cream, if you prefer)

    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Optional: 2 tablespoons nut butter of choice

How to Make Hot Chocolate Big Batch

In a large pan (deep enough to use a hand blender) bring almond milk and vanilla extract to just under boiling on a medium/ low heat. Turn off the heat and add Keto Hot Chocolate Mix and optional nut butter, if using.

Stir with a spatula to combine. Then process with a hand blender until smooth and frothy. This is essential to get the creaminess without cream and also to get rid of any lumps. Option to use a blender like a Vitamix if you prefer.

For best results, adjust the sweetness to taste and level of raw cacao.

    Can I skip the Collagen?

Collagen is incredible for giving you strong hair, nails and good skin. It’s also great to add more protein into your keto diet… and it’s the key to making your hot chocolate frothy and thick without the need for dairy.

The dairy-free milk of choice you choose will alter the consistency of your Keto Hot Chocolate as some brands froth more than others, but I’ve found almond milk froths using a milk frother and has the best flavor. Other nut milks don’t thicken, but still taste nice.

    Sugar Free Hot Chocolate Toppings

Oh it's delightful to enjoy marshmallows on a cup of hot chocolate but in most grocery stores you won't find any that are sugar free.

I don't have my own sugar-free marshmallow recipe but my friend Carolyn from All Day I Dream About Food has a simple recipe you might like.

I purchased the Choczero brand of sugar free marshmallows online on Amazon and they taste great! Even my kids like them on top of the hot chocolate!

Another great addition to top the cocoa is, sugar free whipped cream using heavy whipping cream and your favorite sugar free sweetener to taste.

If you're feeling a little bit more indulgent, add some sugar free chocolate syrup over the whipped cream or sugar free marshmallows!

    More Hot Chocolate Flavors

Note: these are single serve quantities. Multiply up for larger batches.

    Spiced Cinnamon

Follow the method for the basic recipe, but add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the hot chocolate mix with an optional pinch of chili powder.

    Boozy

Follow the method for the basic recipe, but stir in 1 ounce of chosen liquor like keto baileys, brandy, rum or amaretto with the hot chocolate powder before blending.

    Peppermint

Add 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the hot chocolate mix. Optional; add liquid peppermint stevia to taste.

    Orange and Cardamom

In a large pan (deep enough to use a hand blender) bring 10 ounces almond milk and a large peeling of orange zest (approximately ½ orange) + 2 cracked cardamom pods to just under boiling on a medium/ low heat. Remove from the heat and infuse 5 minutes.

Remove cardamom pods and zest. Warm the almond milk up again and then turn off the heat and add Keto Hot Chocolate Mix. Stir to combine then blitz with a hand blender until smooth and frothy.

Does this mix (as written) make enough for just one cup of hot chocolate? Not sure If I am understanding correctly?

The recipe card ingredients listed make for just one serving, but above in the blog post I wrote how to make it for more servings if you need.

Whenever you see optional next to an ingredient in my recipes, that means it's not included in the nutrition info.
